Full event report of the BMX Masters 2010, Cologne (GER)

Day 1: Wild Tricks and perfect weather!

It doesn't get much better than this: with temperatures soaring high and the sun blasting, riders went nuts on the first day of the BMX Masters 2010 presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink and had the crowd on their feet!

Things went off with a bang right away when Pro Flatland Qualifiers rolled around at 2pm. In the end it was Matthias Dandois, possibly the best Flatland rider in the world right now, who took the number one qualifying spot. But this doesn't mean that the competition wasn't stiff. Head judge Michael Steingraeber (GER) knows: "The underdogs were really going and might be good for a surprise or two."

Super Ramp Prelims were off the hook too. Daniel Dhers (VEN) and Ben Wallace (ENG) made the finals no problem, but they also have the young guns breathing down their necks. Standouts were Ondra Slez and Michael Beran from the Czech Republic, who murdered the ramp with huge Tailwhip Flairs. Not to mention 17-year-old Alex Coleborn (ENG), who threw down a huge Barrel Roll over the spine straight into a perfect 900.

Icecold ROCKSTAR in hand, everyone made their way over to the dirt jumps, where the old-school heads were already hanging on Bob Haro's (USA) lips, who was giving a speech about the founding days of BMX Freestyle. But the downright highlight of the day were the first two heats of the Dirt Prelims. Before the sun set TJ Ellis (USA) had dropped a massive Superman Flip over the first 30 foot double, only outdone by Leonardo Moreiras (BRA) Triple Whip that had the crowd raise the roof for him. With dirt legend Cory Nastazio (USA) in the third and last heat tomorrow at noon, it will interesting to see if he will be able to surpass such tight competition.

After such an exciting day, riders and fans are now on their way to the Grand Opening parties at the Subway and Sensor Clubs. There won't be much time to sleep tonight, though, because Saturday will be totally action packed as well. The last heat of Dirt Prelims is followed straight by Pro Park Prelims, where Brett Banasiewicz is ready to throw down some serious moves. With Super Ramp Finals going down at 7:30pm and the Dirt Finals right afterwards, Saturday evening will be one to remember. And don't forget about the official BMX Masters 2010 Party at the Gloria, where everyone can rock out with their favorite pros.

Day 2: GROUND-BREAKING TRICKS FOR A RECORD CROWD

Day two at the BMX Masters 2010 presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink and what an amazing day it was! 400 riders from 30 different countries held nothing back and brought the record crowd to its feet with never-seen-before tricks.

Things started off with Girls Park. When Camila Harambourn (ARG) pulled a No Handed Backflip, everyone realized that girls can ride just as impressive as guys.

Daniel Dhers (VEN) took the top qualifying spot in Pro Park with a No Handed 720 flatspin, followed closely by Brett Banasiewicz (USA), who fired out a 360 Backflip for second place. Points between those two are very close, so you know they both will have to step up their game in the finals for a shot at the win. This will be a battle to watch out for tomorrow!

Pro Flatland is a crowd favorite at the BMX Masters every year and 2010 was no different. The crowd was going off for the finalists and in the end it was Adam Kun (HUN) who was able to beat Matthias Dandois (FRA) for first place, making his win the first big surprise of the BMX Masters 2010.

Just before sunset a huge crowd had assembled in front of the Super Ramp for the next highlight of the day: Pro Finals. Cheered on by a massive crowd, Ondra Slez (CZE) fired out a crazy Frontflip Flair, followed by a never-seen-before Flair to Footjam on the subbox by Alex Coleborn.

But this wasn't it, the biggest highlight was still to come: Dirt Finals. Once again the limits of what is humanly possible were pushed to the max, when TJ Ellis (USA) threw down a Tailwhip Frontflip and James Foster (USA) busted out an unbelievable Double Truck to Downside Whip.

Day 3 & summary - BMX Masters 2010: the perfect weekend!

What a weekend! 12.000 fans came out to Cologne's Jugendpark on three beautiful summer days to check out the BMX Masters presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink, countless internet users watched the live-stream. They were in for a treat!

It was the BMX highlight of the year! The perfect weather, great crowd and best riders on the planet made the BMX Masters 2010 presented by ROCKSTAR Energy an unforgetable event that will surely go down as one of the best contests ever in BMX history!

400 riders from 30 countries were in attendance to compete in Dirt, Park, Flat and the newly introduced Super Ramp class for a shot at the 20.000 Euro prize money. There was also a Girls class and the old-school heads were stoked, because Bob Haro himself, the founder of BMX Freestyle, presented never-seen-before photos and illustrations in the Oldschool-Zone.

The first big surprise of the weekend was Adam Kun (HUN) taking the win in Pro Flat Finals on Saturday, outscoring Matthias Dandois (FRA), who is regarded as the best flatland rider in the world, by just a fraction of a point. But Matthias came back in full force on Sunday, winning Suzuki's Best Combo Contest.

15-year old Brett "Mad Dog" Banasiewicz (USA) landed a perfect Cashroll in Pro Park Finals, a trick that had never been pulled before in a BMX competition. Even though X-Games Gold medalist Daniel Dhers (VEN) fired out an awesome Barspin to Lookdown Corked 720, he still couldn't stop Brett from walking away with first place.

The Dirt Finals at the BMX Masters are always one of the biggest highlights of the BMX season every year and of course 2010 was no different! With the sun going down over the nearby Rhine river, the stage was set perfectly for the riders to go off like there was no tomorrow. In the end it was TJ Ellis (USA), who took the win by busting out a perfect Tailwhip Frontflip.

Yet another big surprise came in the form of newcomer Alex Coleborn (ENG) winning Super Ramp with a 900 Air and a stunning Flair to Footjam on the sub box. Ondra Selz (CZE) didn't make the podium, but with the crowd really getting behind eachrider he decided to fire out the first Frontflip Flair ever pulled on a miniramp.

Of course, no BMX weekend is complete without awesome parties. The Grand Opening parties at the Subway and Sensor Club respectively went off and the legendary BMX Masters Party on Saturday had fans and riders rocking out on the dancefloor until the break of dawn.

And that is how an unforgetable event came to a close that no one in attendance will ever forget. Ground-breaking tricks were pulled, sunburns collected and lots of ice-cold ROCKSTAR Energy Drinks consumed. Or to put in MC Catfish's words: "BMX Masters 2010 is the BMX event in Europe!"

We would like to thank all the riders and fans that came out to the Jugendpark on three beautiful summer days. You guys did an awesome job of showing your true love for the sport of BMX and made the BMX Masters 2010 one of the best contests ever! We can't wait for 2011!

BMX Masters 2010 park finals

The BMX Masters 2010 are supported by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink, Suzuki International Europe, British Knights, Skullcandy and Feltbikes

BMX | Telekom Local Support Miniramp Challenge
  •   Telekom Local Support Miniramp Challenge at the new Mellowpark in Berlin/Germany on June 19th, 2010

  •   BMX Miniramp Contest for AM and Pro

  •   Official qualification for the Telekom Extreme Playgrounds in Hamburg on August 29th, 2010.

Premiere parties are the best! Everything is new and unknown, nothing is really predictable and the melancholy of a sad ending is out of sight.
The Telekom Local Support Miniramp Challenge on June 19th, 2010 at the new Mellowpark area is going to be such a premiere party. It is the first contest happening in the virgin miniramp which is planned by Tobi Wicke himself. And as the first miniramp contest should be something special, there’ll be, due to the team format, some very special action: Whether perfectly synchronal side by side or wild spinning one upon the other – there are going to be plenty of highlights in the runs of the 2 men teams!

The best teams who convince the judges with their performances take a financial support back home to their local spot. In Pro class € 3.500 are waiting for the winning duo, the AMs compete for € 2.000. Whether they build a complete ramp, buy some wood or a picnic table – the winners decide how to use the money! It’s going to be thrilling when it is „Berlin against the rest of the world!“ Will the locals be able to use their home advantage or will the spot support be taken out of the capital?! The teams placed second and third won’t go away empty-handed, too: Mini spot support as well as great stuff by Pro-tec, the Fiat Freestyle Team and Felt Bikes are already waiting for the riders.

Telekom Local Support

But that’s not enough! All riders at the Telekom Local Support Miniramp Challenge have the chance to qualify for the Telekom Extreme Playgrounds in Hamburg on August 29th, 2010. The three best Pro riders and the best AM get their ticket to ride against guys like last year’s winner Mark Webb, Ben Wallace or Harry Main.

Get pampered by the carefree package at the Telekom Local Support Miniramp Challenge: free rider’s BBQ, the Service Van with all tools and most spare parts, no starting fee, no entry and legal camping.

The Mellowpark crew is celebrating the yearly Mellowpark Jam during the whole weekend, so there’s going to be some entertaining stuff like dirt riding, art shows and live music besides the Telekom Local Support Miniramp Challenge.

BMX | Game of Skills 2010

Trough the fact that a volcano caused loads of trouble with flights, a lot of riders and also one of our djs were stuck at their departure airports.
still the contest was packed with supergood BMX Flatland riders! the original planned game was replaced by a battle contest because it would have taken too long and so the riders battled their way up to the final round that in the end consisted of Matthias Dandois, Sebastian Pospischil and Alex Jumelin.
Alex took the win and was superstoked about the weekend! Enjoy and PEACE! – Michael Sommer

Really loved the venue because of its historical punk backround one of my friends in Vienna explained to me. Great riders from all over Europe like Viki Gomez , Alex Jumelin or Matthias dandois showed up. The Contest System itself was a great idea but perhaps a little too compilcated for some riders that are used to a regular format. The Contest was switched to the regular system which wasn’t bad either. We all had a good time seeing friends, partying and doing what we like the most! Riding! – Frank “Lowcash” Lukas

GameOfSkills

Game Of Skills Story by Sebastian Grubinger!
Michael Sommer made the decission to turn Vienna into the center of international flatland bmx for one weekend in 2010.
But this time it should be none of the usual contest. A new contest format should help to show a new, original and exciting flatland event and also to bring the diversity of the sport closer to the audience – a great idea!

Despite volcanic eruption, many canceled flights and chaos in the sky for some days, more than 25 international riders made it to the capital of Austria. Some even jumped on their cars and drove over 15 hours across Europe to participate and be part of this event!

gameofskills

The following riders, and many more made it to the Carhartt Game of Skills:
Viki Gomez, Alex Jumelin, Matthias Dandois, Hiro Morizaki, Adam Kun, Michael Steingräber, Frank Lukas, Marton Szilagy, Sepy, Sebastian Pospischill, Markus Redelberger.

In addition to the amazing riding level, the Carhartt Crew created a perfect atmosphere for riders and the public!
One had the feeling all enjoyed the time and everybody was part of a big family!
Beside that, nothing was missing: food, drinks, chillarea, sun chairs backstage area, showers, etc. – everything was organised.

gameofskills

After all arrived, had time for practice, chatting and chilling, the qualification and best trick contest started. A good beginning to warm up the riders and the croud for the big final – the battles!

Groups of three riders where picked out of a hat to battle and to find out who got the most skills that day.
Unfortunately it turned out that this format took too much time and after a short discussion, the format was switched to a “normal” battle format.

Despite some initial back and forth the croud could see the individuality of flatland of it’s finest and MC Roman Scheid made the public scream out their souls for each rider!

gameofskills

Right after the party started at the same venue with DJs, drinks and a well used dance floor!

All in all a great contest, great riders, great organisation, great location, great audience – a perfect day!

Results:
1st Alex Jumelin
2nd Sebastian Pospischill
3rd Matthias Dandois

Best Trick:
Matthias Dandois

Getting better and better every year, that's the motto of the BMX Masters 2010 presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink and the new contest-format: Starting this year the BMX Masters will run three instead of five disciplines.

To secure the best conditions possible to all participants of the BMX Masters 2010 presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink, which will take place July 16th to 18th 2010 in Cologne Jugendpark, we have decided to concentrate on the disciplines Dirt, Park and Super-Ramp this year.
